Looking for something different to do for the holidays, Mabel and I sent our bikes to the Huang Shan (Yellow Mountain) area and rode around there for a while. Mabel now has a personal best of an 80 kilometre day over a mountain - which makes for a happy husband (and a surprised one).
The scenery you see here is typical of what we rode through. It was fantastic! Mountains, surprisingly good roads, and not a lot of traffic. The people we met were a strange mix as well, but did make for an interesting ride.
The rewards to all the uphills are the declines. Fun!
Going downhill can be fast, but if you're good like me, you just get your knee down...
One of the problems in a country with so many people is that no matter where you go, this is what you are going to see. Any area that may look popular is fenced off, a high charge is levied, and the masses flock.
This is a 'nature walk' at the foot of the Yellow Mountain.
Country people seem to be the same the world over. On country roads in Australia, it is not uncommon to see farmers drive from one field to another across a road without looking, as they are used to being alone and don't expect anybody out there (having done many motorcycle trips on country roads, I know this stereotype is true).
In this region we met an old guy on a mountain road who stopped, parked his bike in the middle of the road, and proceeded to talk to us. Oblivious to the fact that traffic had to go around his bicycle. Finished, he hopped back on the bike, rode off, with the traffic still moving around him.
But wait a minute, this happens in the city here too...
