The following is an extract from my journal that I wrote whilst waiting for the Dentist.
Sitting in a waiting room at a Dentist. This I am not looking forward to, I have no faith in the Chinese medical system. But I have no choice.
The rooms are like factories. Rows of people lying down, getting work done. The place is half built, grinding noise in the background of work being carried out on 'renovations'. Just the sound you need right now. Still have a half hour wait, so Emy [my Waiban, the person who ensures that things run smoothly for us] had popped out to buy something. God help me if I have to go in in the mean time.
Walls are dirty, people everywhere, hawking and spitting - at least they are putting it into a bin. Places I'd rather be: Spanish Inquisition; Salem in the 1600s; Dante's Inferno. There is a large middle-age woman at the reception, wearing the white coat that somehow lends you an air of respectibility - authority. Doesn't appear to be friendly.
Man sitting next to me with his finger up his nose - he is not an uncommon sight.
Now some parents are pointing me out to their child. They are more interested then he is.
Somehow the guy next to me has managed to get his finger even further up his nose.
Attractive lady, at least looks sophisticated - that is until she hawks into the bin (this is common as well). The illusion is lost.
-----------------------
Well, it wasn't so bad. Reasonably clean inside, but could be a lot better. I had to go in without Emy, so was not sure of myself. Made the mistake of understanding the Dentist, then she spoke faster and lost me. Started probing straight away, got the drill out and that was when I heard Emy's voice - Ah, the voice of an Angel. Now I could communicate.
She was drilling very quickly, no injections (not that one was needed), no suction, nothing. First poked around, then in with the drill. The station I was at had not had a thorough cleaning for a while. Small spot of rust on the arm, as well as two small, streaked stains - I knew what they were. Anyway, got a filling. Not a bad job really and wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. All for 50 Yuan (12.50 Australian).
